China is rapidly developing powerful space weapons, including sophisticated anti-satellite missiles, lasers, jammers, orbiting killer robots and cyber tools, designed to “blind and deafen” the enemy, according to the latest Pentagon’s annual “China Military Power” report to Congress.
The report states that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) continues to acquire and develop a range of counter-space capabilities and related technologies, including kinetic-kill missiles, ground-based lasers, and orbiting space robots.
The Pentagon report, based on Defense Intelligence Agency information, discloses for the first time that China is working on space weapons capable of attacking enemy targets on Earth’s surface.
In addition to the space-based weapons in China’s arsenal, the Pentagon warns that the PLA now has more than 400 nuclear warheads. These figures show that China has doubled its nuclear arsenal in just two years. At that pace Beijing could stockpile approximately 1,500 warheads by 2035.
The United States’ nuclear arsenal has an estimated 5,428 warheads, according to a recent SIPRI report. The other US adversary – Russia, possesses the largest nuclear arsenal in the world with an estimated 6,000 nuclear warheads.
